What's the Real Problem

A"problem" means something is wrong, correct? Not always. A problem is any complex situation that involves uncertainty and needs to be studied or corrected.

     All of the following could be classified as problems:

questions work schedules
puzzles car troubles
road maps budget limitations

Look at a problem in different ways

Sam Randall is the owner of a medium-sized business that makes furniture for interior decorators. He needs a higher income so he can send his son Fred to an expensive college in three years. Sam is panicking at the thought of making enough money to meet challenging expenses. As Sam thinks about his problem, he realizes he can address the college problem in several ways:

  • Secure more customers
  • Find a less expensive source for fabrics
  • Reduce expenses
  • Identify a less expensive college
  • Require his son to help with college expenses
