10. Practice, practice, practice
Remember the old saying, "Practice makes perfect"? Well, it’s true. It’s almost impossible to do something over and over and get worse. Habits (both good and bad) develop through repetition. By practicing your speaking, writing, listening, and interpreting skills, you will become a good communicator.
Try these:
- Speaking: Make a decision to remove "uh," "ah," and "ums" from your speech.
- Writing: Write a two-paragraph note to a friend. Then read it and rewrite it in simpler and clearer words.
- Listening: As you listen to a teacher, remove everything from your mind except what the teacher is discussing.
- Interpreting: Watch a person as he talks and try to "read between the words."
