9. Fit communication to situation

Do you know a jokester who tries to be funny at the wrong times or someone who makes comments that are inappropriate to the situation?

Part of communicating is interpreting what another person is saying and knowing how to respond. As you practice interpreting, you will learn what type of response is needed.

Here are some examples:

  • When a coworker has a serious look on her face, expect a serious conversation.
  • If a coworker is "all business," don’t try to be "cute" with your comments.
  • If a coworker has good news or is proud of an accomplishment, reply with praise, even though you may be busy or frustrated over another matter.
