Summarize what you learn

Factoids

  • Since World War II ended, the U.S. has been the global leader in inventions.
  • Economic possibilities for the future of the U.S. will be constrained only by human ingenuity, not by the limits of materials, muscular power, dexterity, or memory. (U.S. Congress 1988)
  • As technology outgrows repetitive work, employees spend more of their time using problem solving and creativity skills.

While problem solving, you will uncover a great deal of information. You should summarize in simple terms what you learn. The summary should be specific, brief, and well researched. Identify any negatives that should be considered before the solution is implemented.

A possible summary of a problem faced by a travel agency is described below:

Mr. and Mrs. Gamble ordered first-class tickets to Jamaica. When they picked the tickets up at the airport, they discovered they were booked in coach seats. A long-planned, anxiously awaited vacation got off to a bad start before the plane ever lifted off the ground.

The problem occurred because the travel agent did not enter the reservation in the computer immediately. When he did enter the reservation for first class seats, the computer automatically changed the seats to coach because of overbooking. The summary should be specific, brief, and well researched.

This problem has occurred with two other customers and another agent this month. We need to review our data entry procedures and develop a better procedure for booking seats.
