9. Identify miscellaneous deductions

In addition to the types of withholding explained in items 3 through 8, you may see other small deductions.

For instance, all states provide unemployment insurance. Your employer usually pays the costs. In a few states, however, a small amount is deducted from the employee’s paycheck.

Several states also provide their own disability insurance. This type of insurance gives you income if you are too disabled to work. The insurance fees may be taken out of your paycheck.

Insurance fee calculations:

  • Suppose your state provides disability insurance at a fee of 1% of your salary. For a weekly gross pay of $615.38, how much will your deduction be?
  • For the answer, multiply $615.38 by 1%, or .01:
    $615.38 × .01 = $6.15
