8. Test drive with special attention to defects
Just as with a new car, your test drive will tell you if the vehicle feels right—if you like the handling, the power, the seating.
Watch especially for signs of unusual wear or damage. If something feels strange about the car, find out why.
As you test drive, notice:
- Sticking or slipping of gears
- Sponginess of brakes
- Hesitations in acceleration
- Gauges that aren’t working or that show danger signals (high temperature, low oil pressure, etc.)
- Harshness or bounce in the ride
- Pulling to one side
